73 universities, 15 countries and 100 000 students in engineering and engineering sciences 
An ambitious project for the Mediterranean driven by sustainable development and innovation

73 universities and schools of engineering have been working together over the past fifteen years with the twofold aim of promoting the teaching of sustainable development in engineering higher education in the Mediterranean countries and of playing a key role in working out a sustainable development policy that will be thought through globally and applied locally.

The ambition of the Réseau Méditerranéen des Écoles d’Ingénieur (RMEI) is to be part of a dynamic aiming to make of the Mediterranean, the cradle of our civilisation, a by-word for peace and prosperity.

The actions of the RMEI concern not only student engineers and higher education institutions but also industry and local government. The RMEI seeks to give the engineers trained here a sense of pride in working in and for the Mediterranean region and in acting during the 40 years of their career as responsible drivers of economic development, fully aware of the need to take into account the priorities at both local and national levels. The network is able to work in partnership with both major groups and SMEs by focussing on the task of identifying the problems that are specific to the Mediterranean and seeking solutions through innovation and mobility.

EDUCATION, INNOVATION, RESEARCH are the key words adopted by the RMEI. The various actions undertaken by the network focus on education (sustainable development cindynics, microelectronics, eco-design), quality (assessment of institutions, of educational courses), research on topics linked to sustainable development in the Mediterranean region and technology transfer in partnership with the business incubator Marseille-Innovation.
The twin cornerstones of the actions of the RMEI are the young students, who are the future managers of the industries of the Mediterranean region, and the research potential of the member schools and universities that are its members. There are today more than 100 000 students in engineering and engineering sciences among the 53 RMEI member schools and universities, in 13 countries.

The Mediterranean, while remaining closely linked with Europe, should extend its relations worldwide. The RMEI has developed close links with other international networks that share some of the same preoccupations.
This action has received the support of UNESCO that has entrusted the École Centrale Marseille with the responsibility for the UNESCO Chair in Innovation and Sustainable Development (Chair 651).
